The BBC annual report is not a traditional investor relations document, being separated in two parts – Part One being the Trust’s report, and Part Two the Executive’s. In 2009, the Trust sought our advice on structuring, drafting and editing Part One, to make it consistent with their brand and tone of voice guidelines. Since then, each year we have consulted with Trust staff to develop their sections of the report and edited the content. In 2011, Claire was asked to sit on the panel to help the BBC choose a new design agency, and in 2015, the Executive asked us to advise their team on the content for Part Two as well.
The BBC has a set of ‘protocols’, or policy documents that set out its standard practices and procedures and determine the respective responsibilities of the Trust and the Executive. Such documents can be lengthy and unwieldy, so the Trust asked us to help them rationalise the documents, and create a template and style that would make the protocols easy for BBC employees to follow. We then edited the full set of protocols to turn ‘legalese’ into clear, accessible language.
While the BBC Trust was in existence, Claire worked with the Trustees to develop their online biographies, following the 2009 launch of a new website to help the Trust explain its role more clearly, including giving a more personal insight into the Trustees. She drafted the structure and interview questions, interviewed the Trustees and wrote up their pages for the launch, and continued to draft new profiles as new Trustees were appointed.
